Increased Throughput

However, we also recognise that, in cutting optimization, yield is not the whole story. Therefore, SECANT takes account of the cost of picking raw materials from the warehouse, the savings in machine time if bars can be cut as a bundle and the costs of resetting the cutting device for each change of pattern.

Managed Offcuts

Failing to manage offcuts can result in capital being tied up in an ever-expanding range of raw material sizes. The decisions on when to use an offcut and when to create an offcut are a vital part of cut planning. Creating an offcut may reduce wastage but the offcut will need to be re-handled before its value can be realized. With SECANT you can implement a consistent offcuts policy.

Angled Cuts

SECANT can also handle the range of problems introduced by mitre (or angled) cutting. The gains in yield achieved by nesting complementary angles depends on the symmetry of the cross section, the face being angle cut, the minimum and maximum angles that can be cut by the saw and the clamping equipment. All these considerations are handled.

SECANT Lite aims to minimize the number of cycles the saw has to make by utilizing the full cutting height of the saw as often as possible. Therefore, valuable time is saved in the production area by maximizing your cutting capacity.

The accuracy of SECANT Lite ensures that it makes exactly what you want. It will never plan for less than the quantities you have requested. Minimizing the extras produced and providing you with full control of your production means you receive the savings from reduced inventory.

Feedline Control

SECANT Lite controls the number of different cut parts in production at any time helping to avoid congestion problems in the marshalling area.

Pattern Complexity

SECANT Lite can be configured to produce patterns with or without turns, either including or prohibiting third phase cutting.

Pattern Editing

Whilst SECANT Lite will generate the best patterns possible using the data provided sometimes it may be necessary to manual modify the patterns for reasons outside the scope of the optimization. SECANT Lite offers a fully featured graphical editor, permitting any modification of the patterns desired but warning where restrictions have been violated. A user-defined report is shown under the editing area so that the impact of changes on yields or panel production can be seen immediately.

SECANT Desktop

SECANT Desktop expands on the entry level SECANT Lite product by including:

Mixed Material

In SECANT Lite any piece in the cutting list may be produced from any item in the stock list. SECANT Desktop can accept a cutting list made up of pieces of different materials. When the cutting patterns are generated, the cutting list is sorted by material and cross referenced with the stocks of raw materials that are available. Each material is then cut planned and a single report produced showing the cutting patterns for each material in turn.

Cost-based Optimization

Savings made through a reduction in material wastage can rapidly be lost by increases in production time due to complicated patterns, or the tying up of capital through an inconsistent offcut policy. SECANT Desktop can balance material usage with production cost and offcut use/production to produce the requirement in the most cost-effective way.

Multi-objective Optimization

The objective of an optimization can be dependant on the current status of the business at any given time – a high value material may require an absolute maximum yield optimization, or an urgent order may need producing in the fastest possible time. The multi-objective optimization functionality of SECANT Desktop allows the user to run the same cutting list and stock file against multiple control configurations. The user may then review all the results before selecting the best option to send forward for production.

Production Sequence

The highest yields and the most efficient saw usage can generally be achieved by allowing SECANT to freely combine any of the piece sizes in the cutting list. However, such patterns may result in an unacceptable amount of work in progress where at any time a large number of orders are partially complete. SECANT Desktop can constrain the result so that pieces are produced broadly in line with a production schedule, or to meet the production requirements downstream of the saw.

Completion Optimization

In order to meet production requirements, or obey cutting restrictions, it is sometimes possible that the last patterns in a pattern set are of a lower yield than may be acceptable. Completion optimization allows patterns to be removed from the job, before the shortfall in panels is produced using a more relaxed set of cutting controls, or with the addition of additional available material for example.

Range Optimization

If you are able to order a bespoke stock size from a supplier you may wish to know the ideal stock size for use with a particular job. SECANT Desktop’s ranging functionality searches for the optimum board size for production of a particular SECANT job.

Import & Export

SECANT Desktop can import cut part and stock availability directly from Excel spreadsheets, or via comma separated variable text files generated by third party software. Bespoke customization of import and export processes is also available.

Saw Interfaces

SECANT can produce interface files in the standard PTX and CPOUT formats as well as in the native formats of a wide range of saw manufacturers. A selection of controls also allows patterns to be tailored to the capabilities of the saw.

SECANT Enterprise

SECANT Enterprise expands on SECANT Desktop by including:

Automated processing of cutting jobs

SECANT Enterprise may be used to provide automatic pattern generation for other software that generates SECANT jobs as part of its function. For example, an in-house order management system may create a SECANT job which is then submitted to a queue for cut planning. Alternatively, data entry SECANT modules may be used by a sales office to prepare jobs that are then submitted for cut planning to a powerful computer running SECANT Enterprise. Automated processing can also provide a batch optimization facility where a series of time consuming jobs are cut planned overnight.
